Top 10 Must-Haves to Keep in Your Car This Winter

With the winter season comes a whole new list of safety concerns on the road. The best way to stay ahead of these issues — being prepared for whatever comes your way. Before you embark on those snowy, wintry drives this season, make sure you take these things along for the ride.

1. Ice Scraper & Shovel

Both an ice scraper and shovel are essential tools to have in your car, regardless of the day’s weather forecast. You don’t want to get stuck in a snowdrift with an iced-over windshield, especially if you don't have a reliable way to regain visibility and clear your path. And if you don't have enough space in your trunk for a full-fledged shovel, consider purchasing a foldable option instead.

2. Flashlight

If you experience car trouble at night, flashlights can be a life-saver. After all, the only thing worse than being stuck on the side of the road is getting stuck in the dead of night.

3. Jumper Cables and/or Jump-Start Box

Plummeting temperatures can quickly lead to a dead car battery, so jumper cables or a jump-start box are some of the best tools to have in your car during the winter season.

If you need to choose between jumper cables or a jump-start box, we recommend choosing the latter instead (or both). With jumper cables, you may have to rely on a good samaritan for assistance. With the alternative, as long as you remember to keep it fully charged, you'll be able to hop back on the road in no time. Overall, having both handy may be the best option.

And if you'd rather avoid dead batteries altogether, stop by your nearest Tires Plus for a free battery check.* We’ll test your battery to ensure it's in good working condition, and we can replace it if needed. While you’re at the shop, consider getting a complete vehicle inspection too. This way, you can hit the road with peace of mind knowing that your vehicle is in good shape.

4. Blankets & Warm Clothing

If your car heater stops working or won't turn on for whatever reason, you want to make sure you have the necessary supplies to stay warm.  Stash a blanket, gloves, hat, and anything else that can help keep you warm in these situations. For any heating issues, you can stop by one of our many Tires Plus locations to have it checked out.

5. Kitty Litter or Sand

Experienced wintertime drivers know that kitty litter and sand can work miracles when your car gets stuck in the snow. Simply sprinkle it under and around your tires, and it can help you regain the traction needed to get your vehicle back onto the road.

6. Portable Phone Charger

Don’t risk getting stranded with a dead phone. Invest in a portable phone charger, and make sure that the battery is always topped up before leaving home.

7. First Aid Kit

To ensure that you have all of the medical supplies you need in an emergency, add a fully-stocked first aid kit to your list of winter car must-haves. Whether you get a minor injury in an icy accident or your child gets a bloody nose on the drive to Grandma’s, it's always a great idea to have a first aid kit on hand.

8. Food and Water

Food and water are also must-haves to keep in your car, regardless of the season. Nonperishable food items and water bottles can save your life should you get stuck in your vehicle during extreme weather conditions. No one thinks it can happen to them, but you’ll never regret being too prepared.

9. Portable Air Compressor

Extreme temperatures can cause tires to lose pressure, and underinflated tires are more susceptible to tire failure. By keeping a portable air compressor or tire inflator in your trunk, you can ensure that your tires are properly inflated at all times.

However, the best way to prevent a tire blowout is by ensuring that your tires are in tip-top shape at all times. From flat tire repair to tire inspections, Tires Plus is there when you need it most.

10. Emergency Flares or Reflectors

Pulling onto the side of the road, for whatever reason, can quickly become a dangerous situation — especially if visibility is low. Emergency flares or reflectors can help ensure that other drivers see you and your vehicle should you ever need to pull out onto the side of a road or highway.
